The Governing Board

School governors are volunteers who work as a team, alongside the Headteacher to set the vision, aims and policies of the school. Their primary aim is long-term vision and accountability, with the Headteacher responsible for day-to-day mangement.

The governing board has three core functions:

1. Strategic Leadership

Governors work with the headteacher to establish the school's overall vision, ethos, and strategic direction, outlining aims and objectives for the future.

They participate in strategic planning and policy development to ensure the school's continuous improvement.

2. Accountability

Governors are responsible for monitoring and holding the headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils.

They review progress towards achieving the school's aims and objectives and ensure the curriculum is well-taught.

3. Financial Performance

Governors are responsible for approving and overseeing the school's budget, ensuring that financial resources are used effectively and well spent.

They also make key decisions regarding the school's staffing and the number of staff employed.

The governing board at Funtington Primary School have been pleased to continue to play a key role in supporting the school to thrive over the past year. Building on the positive feedback from Ofsted inspectors, the governors have continued to work strategically alongside school staff to preserve our school ethos, champion pupil wellbeing and safety, and continue to promote a love of learning.

This year, the board supported the full implementation of the Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) programme, which is still being built upon. This programme is designed to provide an inclusive and engaging play environment, contributing to every pupil’s personal development and enjoyment of school life. Governors allocated funding to transform our school grounds and positively impact the playtime experience for all pupils, including the most disadvantaged and vulnerable.

To support our families, we approved a revised financial model for our school-led Breakfast and After-School Wraparound Care Programme, ensuring its ongoing sustainability. The new model allows greater flexibility, allowing more families to use the provision.

Using data and observations from the Headteacher’s reports, the board actively challenged and supported school leaders in the implementation of the school’s development priorities. This included monitoring lead subjects, approving the funding for resources and staff training, and restructuring roles to address senior leadership workloads and promote staff progression.

Meeting every month during the school year, the board ensures that every strategic decision benefits our pupils, staff, and the wider community, promoting a culture of aspiration for all of our pupils rooted in the Funtington Footprints.
